Parents and Carers Guide to College

Starting college is a big step for both students and their families.

At Morley College London, students are encouraged to become more independent, but they are never on their own. We provide structured support, clear communication, and a safe environment to help every student succeed.

College at a glance

  • Students are treated as young adults and take more responsibility
  • Parents are involved and there is regular contact with you (parent evenings for example)
  • Strong academic, wellbeing and safeguarding support is in place
  • We act quickly if there are concerns about attendance, progress or safety

What changes when your child goes to college?

College is different from sixth-form in many ways.

  • Students manage their own timetable and attendance
  • Independence is encouraged as preparation for further study or work
  • Communication is normally with the student first

However, this doesn’t mean parents are excluded. We work with families to support students, especially when there are concerns.

How does Morley support your child?

We provide support in three main ways.

Academic support

  • Help from tutors and support staff
  • Guidance on coursework, assignments and progression
  • Study skills and additional learning support, if needed
  • Career advice and access to meeting employers

Wellbeing support

  • Access to pastoral and wellbeing teams
  • Support for anxiety, stress or personal challenges
  • A safe inclusive learning environment

Safeguarding

  • Dedicated safeguarding staff
  • Clear processes for reporting concerns
  • A strong focus on student safety and wellbeing

How parents can stay involved

We understand that parents and carers can still play an important role.

You can:

  • Contact the college if you have concerns
  • Be involved in discussions, where appropriate
  • Support your child’s attendance and progress at home

What happens if something goes wrong?

We take concerns seriously and act quickly.

If your child has poor attendance

  • We contact the student
  • We may contact the parents/guardian
  • Support is in place to help improve attendance

If your child is struggling with their studies

  • Tutors provide additional help
  • Support teams can step in
  • A plan is put in place to help them succeed

If there are wellbeing or safeguarding concerns

  • Our safeguarding team is alerted immediately
  • Appropriate support is provided
  • Parents/carers are involved where necessary
