Sustainability Week at Morley

Earth Day (Wednesday 22 April) provides a global moment to reflect on our shared responsibility for the planet — and at Morley, it sits at the heart of Sustainability Week 2026. Running from Monday 20 to Friday 24 April 2026, Sustainability Week builds on our ongoing commitment to climate action and net zero, offering staff and students practical, creative and accessible ways to engage with sustainability across the College.

Morley has made measurable progress against our sustainability pledges by embedding them into everyday practice across the College – and adapting our buildings to reduce heat loss. Below, we reflect on what we’ve achieved so far and some the great activities students and staff are involved in this week.

Introduction to Beekeeping Course

Progress to date

Integrating sustainability into the curriculum has been a central focus, with a growing range of courses engaging students in environmental issues through both theory and hands‑on learning.

Programmes such as Sustainability through Storytelling, Practical Horticulture, Introduction to Beekeeping, and the Environment Leaders initiative enable students to explore sustainability in meaningful and practical ways.

Alongside raising awareness, these opportunities build real‑world skills. This is demonstrated by the success of the horticulture course, where many students progressed into placements, internships, or employment.

Net Zero

We have strengthened our visible and transparent commitment to net zero by actively engaging with both the local community and the wider Further Education sector. Participation in events such as Waterloo Green Day, alongside hosting a national sustainability conference in partnership with Sustainability Support for Further Education, has positioned the College as an active contributor to sector‑wide conversations on climate action.

Regular Green Day events reinforce this commitment internally, offering practical guidance on recycling while promoting reuse initiatives such as low‑cost clothing sales that reduce waste and extend the life of garments. Our work has been recognised externally through features in local and sector newsletters and through ongoing engagement with sustainability networks.

Through repair workshops, reuse initiatives, and resource‑sharing activities, we continue to support staff and students to adopt more sustainable habits. Funded projects — including the Introduction to Beekeeping course delivered in partnership with Bee Urban and the Resident Sustainability Champions initiative — further empower our community to take ownership of sustainable practices.
