This course at Morley College Waterloo is a continuation of Throwing on a Potters wheel.? Practice is the key to any new instrument and continuing onto this course will give you the chance to do this by solidifying knowledge learnt so far.? This course will increase your potential and confidence to make more complicated forms such as a closed form. Aimed at beginners and for students who need a refresher, we will focus on the throwing fundamentals including the importance of turning.?? This course will cover an introduction to glazing, giving complete ceramic process experience.?? We have a fully equipped studio with a wheel per student.?

Class format and activities

Demonstrations and activities are planned to suit a range of abilities such as left and right-handed placement The activities are designed to help with gaining confidence and understanding of clay whilst on the Potters wheel.???????? Priority is given to beginners first. Students with more experience can ask for both group and individual demonstrations. New and returning students work alongside each other in a mutually supportive environment in which learning is taught both from the tutor and each other.? A variety of learning resources are prepared and suggested such as books, exhibition and gallery visits, video, slideshows, handouts and examples.?

Learning Outcomes

  • 01: Preparation of clay including recycling.
  • 02: Practice hand placement to gain control for centring, opening and pulling up? clay on wheel.
  • 03: Make bowls, bottles and complete with Turning.?
  • 04: Completing form with Glaze.?
  • 05: Demonstrate awareness of Health and Safety issues in ceramics through safe studio practice.?

Course entry requirements

None – Beginners are welcome with no previous knowledge of ceramics.?

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality are required from all students, you need to be able to attend all five sessions to get the most out of this course. There is a £3 per kilo charge for clay on completion of work which includes the bisque and glaze firing.?? The ceramics studio is on the 5th floor and there is lift access.?

What to bring to class

Pen and notebook, apron or old shirt, closed toe shoes. Please bring any clay tools you have, or you may choose to buy beginner's packs on sale for £10.?? Studio tools are available to use.?
