This online course will develop the basic techniques and personal observational principals required to draw and paint, expressively and with confidence. You will explore a variety of drawing media including pencils, charcoal and paint. The course will introduce still life, landscape and the figure/portrait working to a compositional theme. You will be introduced to new ways of seeing, thinking and working and you will be encouraged to develop your own individual styles and methods.

Class format and activities

This is a practical online course, and you will spend most of class time drawing and painting at home. Your tutor will send you a lesson plan by email every week, allowing you to prepare materials and subject-matter in advance. The class uses Microsoft Teams for group discussions and for short lectures on artists’ work, and you will be able to view demonstrations of techniques and materials. Your tutor will offer feedback on any images of your work that you share.

There are no formal entry requirements and students can enrol as complete beginners

What you need to know before you enrol

This is an online course, taught via Microsoft Teams which is one of the digital resources provided with your enrolment. The tutor will be available online during class hours and will provide individual feedback where possible. You will need to supply all your own art materials.

What to bring to class

You will need your own materials. These should include: cartridge paper (e.g. a sketchbook), soft pencils, eraser, sharpener, willow charcoal, soft pastel, ink (either a pen, such as a Tombow brush pen, or a bottle of Indian ink).
