Tap Improvers and Intermediate

Develop your tap dance skills and be able to perform more complex tap numbers. Please be aware that this course is higher level study and is suited to students with some previous experience of tap dance and / or other forms of dance training relevant to Tap. If you have need of guidance about attending this course, please contact dance@morleycollege. ac. uk Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the course learning outcomes. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i. e. progression to an advanced-level course

Class format and activities

The structure of the lesson will consist of 4 components: Warm up in a circle. 10 minutes, practicing tap step routines in the centre. 15 minutes, travelling steps in groups. 15 minutes, practising a short tap routine at the end of the class. 20 minutes. In order to ensure you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor. The tutor will also set assessment activities involving student exchange of ideas and student self-assessment for all students.

Learning Outcomes

  • 01: Demonstrate specific exercises for various pick-up steps
  • 02: Demonstrate exercises combining knowledge of steps, body alignment, use of different tempi, patterns and directions and varied arm lines
  • 03: Demonstrate some Grade 2 and 3 exercises from the IDTA tap syllabus
  • 04: Demonstrate a short routine for the purpose of performing at a Morley Dance performance

Course entry requirements

A good practical level of tap dance knowledge, minimum one year’s experience.

What you need to know before you enrol

Tap dance does involve hops, springs, jumps and turns and can be quite energetic. If you have knee problems or other mobility problems steps can be adjusted to suit your needs. You should have a good level of fitness and stamina. Excellent attendance and punctuality will be required from all students. This course may include some completion of activities outside of class time.

What to bring to class

Preferably tap shoes, but if not hard soles, low heeled comfortable shoes. Loose comfortable clothing, no heavy jewellery, folder for handouts. Advice and Information regarding purchasing tap shoes will be provided at the first session.
