Class format and activities

You will be playing a digital piano with headphones, which gives each student total privacy whilst allowing the tutor to "listen in" using another set of headphones. Students will also learn the basics of music notation and some principles of theory.

Learning Outcomes

  • 01: Demonstrate good posture, hand position, warm-up and practice techniques and habits
  • 02: Play scales, arpeggios and exercises in simple major and minor keys
  • 03: Play melodies, chords and simple counterpoint with independence of hands
  • 04: Differentiate between legato and staccato
  • 05: Read and write simple music, including some dynamics, articulation and expression markings
  • 06: Play repertoire in a variety of styles

Course entry requirements

This course is suitable for students who have completed Piano 2B (or of equivelant standard). You will need access to a piano (acoustic or digital) outside class. Willingness to do short, regular practice sessions between classes: at least 20-30 minutes, at least 4 times a week.

What you need to know before you enrol

You should be careful when playing the piano to maintain good posture and take regular breaks to stretch and relax, to avoid overuse injuries. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals. Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. This course requires study/completion of activities outside of class time.

What to bring to class

Notebook, pencil and eraser, and manuscript paper for music notation. Text: Adult Piano Adventures All-in-One Book 2 [Faber]. The College provides headphones for all students but you are encouraged to bring your own.

What you can do next

Piano 2C continues on to Piano 3A in September, or you may wish to spend further terms in Piano 2. Your tutor will advise. Morley offers Piano courses through all levels up to Advanced.
