Class format and activities

Beginners will be invited to follow a structured programme. The term will build on basic watercolour concepts and skills in relation to traditional and experimental approaches to still-life, figurative and landscape subject matter. Varied examples will be shown by other artists working with realism, abstraction and expressionism. If joining with some experience, you will have the opportunity to identify an individual project either using your own resources or painting from observation. All learners will be encouraged to meet the outcomes at a personal level and those with previous experience may be offered more challenging aspects to planned projects. There will be an emphasis on sharing knowledge, experience and supporting each other via group discussions and shows of work with group crits. The tutor will facilitate group discussions, give presentations, demonstrations and work with students one to one and in groups. Our art and design studios are well-equipped with a range of industry and specialist tools and equipment in a shared access environment. As a college, we look to embed sustainable practice through reducing waste, recycling and upcycling of materials. In the interest of sustainability, Morley College uses Teams and MyDay as digital platforms for sharing resources and information.

Learning Outcomes

• 01: Understand and apply fundamental watercolour techniques, including wet-on-wet, dry brush, glazing, and layering.
• 02: Develop observational skills to translate real-world subjects into expressive watercolour paintings.
• 03: Explore colour mixing and transparency, learning how to create depth, light, and mood using limited palettes.
• 04: Gain confidence in handling materials, including brushes, paper types, and water control.
• 05: Experiment with composition and mark-making, using both traditional and expressive approaches.
• 06: Contribute to group discussions and learn about contemporary Watercolour Painters

Course entry requirements

The course is for all abilities. While it is helpful to come with some drawing experience, complete beginners are welcome.

What you need to know before you enrol

By enrolling on this course, students agree to adhere to the student code of conduct and Health & Safety guidance as posted or as directed by a member of staff. As a Morley College student, you will have access to Microsoft Office platforms, including a dedicated Morley College email. You will need to use your Morley email address for certain college activities.

What to bring to class

Some basic materials are provided, and additional paper and other materials are available for purchase at a low cost. Alternatively, you may wish to bring your own materials.

You may wish to progress more advanced levels such as advanced painting courses or qualifications such as the Foundation and Access to HE courses, the BA (Hons) Creative Practice (subject to validation) and soon to be confirmed MA (Creative Practice).
