This is a practical online creative writing course for writers with some previous experience of memoir or creative writing. In class you will develop extracts from your memoir, further your knowledge of the form and experiment with your writing style. You will develop your critical skills through workshop and class discussion.

Class format and activities

This is a practical creative writing course. Each week there will different writing activities which will help you to further your knowledge of your subject, develop your ideas and experiment with your writing style. You will study texts from a range of life writing material and be asked to contribute to class discussions. You will be expected to share excerpts from your work-in-progress with your fellow students for feedback.

Learning Outcomes

  • 01: Experiment with your writing style.
  • 02: Approach your material using a range of approaches to structuring a memoir.
  • 03: Consider the role of key elements such as scene setting, research, dialogue and structure and apply them to your work in progress.
  • 04: Explore and experiment with different approaches to putting yourself onto the page.

Course entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course but some previous experience of memoir or creative writing is desirable. Beginners to the subject are welcome but you will need to be able to have a reasonable degree of literacy.

A small amount of homework is set each week.

What to bring to class

Pen and paper. You will need to find time to write and read outside of the class (a list of suggested reading will be provided by the tutor). Access to a computer or tablet is and a reliable source of Wi-Fi is essential.
