To use a wider range of materials and challenge ways of thinking. Projects are based on jewellery pieces and small objects. You will be encouraged to think outside the box and exhibit in group and individual shows when opportunities arise.

Class format and activities

This is a practical class. You will learn to expand your ideas into constructive designs and to develop a professional finish and approach to your jewellery making. You will be set a design project to encourage research, inspiration and the development of original designs. Each term the class will explore techniques that are suitable for the design brief and will help you to develop your technical skills. You will also be encouraged to pursue personal project work, for which guidance and support will be given on a one to one basis. Teaching is both in groups and on an individual one to one basis, with technical and critical advice depending on your needs. The tutor will give demonstrations, presentations and lead group discussions around technical and creative subjects. All students negotiate individual learning goals with the tutor and assess these on a learning statement.

  • 04: Develop good benchbook use for recording designs, ideas, samples and techniques

Course entry requirements

You will need to have good jewellery making skills and have studied jewellery making for a couple of years. You will need to be confident to work independently with advice and guidance from the tutor.

What you need to know before you enrol

The jewellery studio is on the 3rd floor of the main building, there is lift access. You need a moderate level of fitness to be able to use jewellery equipment. Some chemicals used may be harmful in pregnancy. Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant and they will advise you as to necessary precautions.

What to bring to class

All tools needed to take part in the course are available in the workshop. We also provide base metals in small quantities. You will need to purchase your own silver, gold, stones, saw blades and drill bits etc. to complete your projects. You should bring a small bench-book to record ideas and designs and a pencil / pen for taking notes. Please bring an apron, a hairtie if your hair is long, and wear sensible footwear, no open toed sandals. Advice and guidance will be given on where to purchase suitable materials.
