Class format and activities

Teaching is both as a whole class and an individual one-to-one basis using demonstrations, discussion, examples, samples, handouts and other technical support material. You will negotiate individual learning goals together with the tutor. Demonstrations with workshop practice will form the main body of the learning environment. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course you will have the opportunity to discuss this with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals. i.e progression to another course.As you begin to develop your own designs, you will do more independent work. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment. Learning Outcomes

• 01: Understand design processes, research skills, fashion awareness, idea generation, sketching techniques and artwork presentation
• 02: Design a small collection of 8 hats, making at least 3
• 03: Develop and hone existing skills in making hats to high level of couture finish
• 04: Understand decorative processes in millinery
• 05: Collate documentation of working methods and technical notes

Course entry requirements

Learners gain entry into this course via interview. Learners should have some previous millinery experience.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality are required from all students. To get the most from this course students are generally expected to allocate approximately two/three hours per week for completion of study/activities outside of class time. Health & Safety information will be given to you at the start of the course and subsequent lessons where necessary. You may be asked to sign a form declaring that you agree to follow college procedures as advised. Some chemicals used may be harmful to certain health conditions or in pregnancy. Please make sure to let your tutor know if this is the case and they will advise you as to the necessary precautions. There is a small additional charge for materials payable in class.

Dressmakers pins, household pins, millinery needles, thimble, matching threads Fabric scissors, paper scissors Pencil, pencil sharpener, eraser, notebook for your notes, sketchbooks Apron (to protect your clothing), face mask Chalk pencil or tailors chalk Ruler, protractor, compass Tape measure (soft) Stiffener brush (decorators brush 1” wide is ideal) Empty glass jar bottle with screw lid for stiffener Cling film Wire Cutters Pliers (small jewellers one are good)

What you can do next

Upon successful completion, students will also be able to take other specialist millinery short courses e.g. Design and Make Conceptual Head Pieces, Carved Block Making, Special Occasion Hats for Royal Ascot or progress to Higher National Certificate in Millinery. Learners can also seek employment/self-employment in the Millinery industry.
