Class format and activities

The normal mode of delivery would be in – centre studio based practice where you will learn new glass technical skills, exploring materials and producing experimental and finished work working in the studios. The course is studio based with projects and an encouragement to develop personal ideas and a commitment to explore practical glass skills. Practical demonstrations with techniques that will cover in the course : applique/mosaic, copper foil, leading, glasssurface decoration like painting and sandblasting, printing, kiln formed glass suing fusing, slumping and open casting; with the opportunity to explore materials and produce experimental and finished work. You will negotiate individual learning goals together with the tutor. Demonstrations with workshop practice will form the main body of the learning environment to embrace the challenging working with glass projects. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course you will have the opportunity to discuss this with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals. As you begin to develop your own designs, you will do more independent work. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment

Learning Outcomes

  • 01: Understand design processes, research skills, idea generation and artwork presentation
  • 02: Provide choices from a selection of art and design/ architectural as well as kiln formed glass
  • 03: Develop drawing skills in order to visualise concepts by using glass and other materials
  • 04: Enable students to develop and express their creative and imaginative potential by producing samples and with final work.
  • 05: Collate documentation of working methods and technical notes
  • 06: Produce an art and design portfolio from concepts to the use of materials when working with glass

Course entry requirements

An interest in the subject and enthusiasm to learn. Learners will gain entry onto this course via an interview and preferably will be asked to show a basic portfolio of drawing work or any creative experience in the Art, Craft and Design in glass or other use of materials. You will also need a GCSE or equivalent at grade D or 3.

Excellent attendance and punctuality are required from all students. Students are generally expected to allocate three hours for out-of-classroom revision. What to bring to class

We stock basic materials in the studio which you can buy at cost price as required. Students will be required to purchase own materials, including an A3 portfolio/s to hold flat artwork, glass, mould mixing materails, own glass enamels. You will need to provide your own protective clothing.

What you can do next

Upon successful completion, learners can seek employment/self-employment in the Glass, Art and Design industry. Students will also be able to take other specialist Glass courses at L3 either on the Certificate or Access Art and Design course at the college.
